Hawaii Caving Travelogue 2010

From the Desert of Kau and Beyond

After several busy days settling, meeting and mapping, a rest day was in order. A party of four (M & Em, Carol and Peter) traveled East to visit Fred Stone and Debbie Ward. In a future edition of this travelogue, look for photos from Debbie & Fred's fruit orchard. We have been enjoying their gifts and will share some of the sights soon.

A rest & tourist day for cavers means sweet dreams for Peter underground. Somehow we missed the beaches again.

This is the view from about 3,000 feet elevation looking towards the lava entry into the sea from somewhere around 12-18 miles distance. The tubes are pouring foundation for the new addition currently under construction. The continuous flow creates a good deal of vog (volcanic fog) which at times makes for a hazy visity from many points on the south side of the island.

We did most of our sightseeing underground. The day after this trip, we spent helping move along construction and improvement projects at the Coons residence. I need to capture a few images of the latest improvements there. I made a trip to Hilo with Mary & John Wilson to help pick up John's truck which had arrived at the dock. John had quite a nasty episode which landed him in the hospital twice and under the knive once. He had a severe emergency with blocked intestinal passages. Not very pleasant, but John is back at home and following a strict diet until everything starts moving properly.

Now we pause for a few restful images from underground Hawaii:

And Peter is still dreaming of setting new stations... While Fred notes our surroundings.
